Possible Causes

Welded main contactor in power module, Contactor coil failure on control board, Contaminated or overheated contactor contacts, Faulty contactor driver circuit on main PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the circuit breaker feeding the NewMotion home charger and verify no voltage is present at the unit before opening any covers. EVSEs contain lethal voltages.

Steps:

  • Power cycle: Turn the charger’s dedicated breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then ON. Check if E001 clears in the NewMotion app and on the LED ring.
  • Listen for contactor click: With the cover closed and power ON, plug in the vehicle. You should hear a distinct click from the internal power module contactor. No click or a repeated clicking may indicate a stuck or failed contactor.
  • Inspect for overheating: After isolating power again and removing the front cover, visually inspect the main power contactor on the power module for discoloration, melted plastic, or burnt smell.
  • Check wiring tightness: Verify all line and load terminals on the contactor and terminal block are tight using an insulated screwdriver. Loose connections can cause arcing and welding.
  • Test coil resistance: If you have a multimeter and are qualified, measure the contactor coil resistance at the control terminals according to the service manual. An open or shorted coil indicates a bad contactor.
  • Replace module if welded: If the contacts are welded or the contactor is integrated into a sealed power module, the entire power module or contactor assembly must be replaced. This is typically a technician-level repair.

When to call a professional: If E001 returns after a power cycle or you confirm welded contacts, contact a certified EVSE technician or NewMotion support for contactor/power module replacement.
