Charger shows 'PEN Fault' or 'Earth Fault – PME Protection', charging disabled

Critical safety: A PEN fault can make exposed metalwork live. Do not attempt to bypass PEN protection. A qualified electrician must investigate immediately.

• Step 1 – Do not use charger: Leave the charger switched OFF at the isolator or consumer unit until the cause is identified.
• Step 2 – Check for wider supply issues: If other equipment in the property is behaving abnormally (e.g. lights bright/dim), contact your electricity network operator.
• Step 3 – Electrical tests (electrician only): Verify neutral and earth continuity, measure voltage between neutral and earth, and confirm compliance with local regulations for PME earthing and EV chargers.
• Step 4 – Inspect PEN protection module: If supply tests are normal but the charger still reports a PEN fault, the internal PEN fault detection module or associated circuitry may be defective and require replacement.
• Step 5 – Confirm earthing solution: Ensure the installation uses an approved earthing method (e.g. integrated PEN protection, TT earthing with earth rod) as specified by Pod Point and local standards.
