Possible Causes

Damaged J1772/CCS charge handle pilot pin, Corroded or bent pins in vehicle connector, Faulty control board pilot driver circuit, Damaged charge cable between wall unit and handle

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the charger’s dedicated breaker at the main panel before touching the unit or cable. Do not attempt repairs with the cover open while energized.

  • Step 1 – Power cycle: Turn the breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then ON. Reconnect the vehicle and see if E001 clears.
  • Step 2 – Inspect the charge handle: Examine the J1772/CCS connector pins, especially the small pilot pin. Look for bent, recessed, or corroded pins and melted plastic. Clean light debris with a dry, soft brush only. Do not use liquids.
  • Step 3 – Check cable strain: Verify the cable from the Rivian wall unit to the handle is not sharply kinked, crushed, or cut. If the outer jacket is damaged or you see exposed conductors, stop using the charger.
  • Step 4 – Test with another EV (if available): If another EV also fails with E001, the fault is likely in the charger, not the vehicle.
  • Step 5 – Internal inspection (advanced): With power OFF and confirmed with a non-contact tester, remove the front cover. Visually inspect the control board area where the pilot signal harness from the cable plugs in. Look for loose connectors, burn marks, or discoloration. Reseat the pilot signal connector firmly.
  • When to stop: If the error persists or you see any burned components, do not continue using the charger. Contact Rivian support or a qualified EVSE technician for control board or cable replacement.
