Rivian charger shows E006 and refuses to start; app indicates ‘Ground not detected’ or ‘Improper grounding’
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: A missing or poor ground is dangerous. Do not bypass ground detection.
- Step 1 – Visual ground check: Turn OFF the breaker. Remove the charger cover. Confirm the green or bare copper ground conductor is firmly attached to the ground terminal inside the Rivian charger.
- Step 2 – Panel ground: At the main or subpanel, verify the ground conductor from the charger circuit is properly landed on the ground bar and that the bar is bonded as required by code.
- Step 3 – Check mounting hardware: If the charger uses a metal backplate, ensure it is not relying solely on mechanical mounting for ground. The dedicated ground conductor must be present.
- Step 4 – Continuity test (for electricians): With power OFF, measure continuity between the charger ground terminal and the main panel ground bar. High resistance indicates a wiring issue.
If wiring is correct and E006 persists, the internal ground detection circuit on the control board may be faulty and requires board replacement by a qualified technician.
