Possible Causes

Failed cable lock solenoid, Jammed mechanical lock, Broken lock position sensor, Faulty driver circuit on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not force locked components; you may damage the cable or housing.

  • Step 1 – Power cycle: Turn breaker OFF for 1 minute, then ON to reset the lock control.
  • Step 2 – Listen for lock actuation: When plugging/unplugging the handle, listen for a click from the lock mechanism. No sound suggests a failed solenoid or driver.
  • Step 3 – Inspect for obstruction: Check around the cable entry and lock area for debris or ice preventing movement.
  • Step 4 – Manual release (if provided): Some units have a manual release tab accessible under a cover. Follow Rivian’s instructions to release the cable without damage.

If E017 persists, the lock assembly or its driver circuit will need replacement by a technician.
