Possible Causes

Worn or pitted connector pins, Loose fit between handle and vehicle inlet, Plugging/unplugging under load due to delayed contactor opening, Contaminants on pins

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Stop using the charger immediately if you see arcing. Arcing can cause fire or damage to the vehicle inlet.

  • Step 1 – Inspect connector: With power off at the breaker, examine the handle pins for burn marks, pitting, or melted plastic.
  • Step 2 – Check insertion technique: Always plug in fully and firmly in one motion; do not partially insert and pause.
  • Step 3 – Inspect vehicle inlet: Look for damage or discoloration inside the vehicle’s charge port. If present, have the vehicle inspected by a dealer.

Damaged connector pins require replacement of the Rivian charge cable and handle assembly. Do not attempt to file or clean pins with abrasives.
