Possible Causes

Damaged pilot wire in Splitvolt cable, Bent or contaminated J1772 control pilot pin, Faulty pilot signal generator on control board, Vehicle charge port control circuit issue

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before inspecting the connector pins closely. Do not insert tools into the vehicle inlet or J1772 connector.

  • Inspect J1772 connector: Look closely at the small control pilot pin and proximity pin inside the Splitvolt handle. Ensure none are bent, recessed, or heavily corroded. Clean gently with a dry cloth if dirty.
  • Check cable strain: Examine the cable near the handle and at the charger body for kinks, crushing, or signs of internal breakage. If the cable has been run over or sharply bent, the pilot conductor may be broken.
  • Test with another EV: If available, connect to a different vehicle. If E04 clears with another car, the original vehicle’s charge port electronics may be at fault.
  • Power-cycle the charger: Turn the breaker OFF for 2–3 minutes, then ON. Reconnect the EV and observe if the error clears.
  • Persistent E04: Indicates likely failure of the pilot signal generator or sensing circuit on the Splitvolt control board. Internal repair requires specialized skills; contact Splitvolt support for board or unit replacement.
