Possible Causes
Damaged proximity pilot switch in J1772 handle, Broken latch mechanism not fully engaging, Worn connector contacts, Internal proximity sensing circuit failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before closely inspecting the connector latch.
- Inspect latch operation: Squeeze and release the J1772 handle latch while observing its movement. It should fully extend and retract without sticking.
- Check for debris: Look for dirt or foreign objects around the latch and in the vehicle inlet that might prevent full engagement. Clean gently with a dry brush or cloth.
- Ensure full insertion: Push the connector firmly into the vehicle until you hear or feel the latch click. A partial connection can trigger E16.
- Test on another vehicle: If the error only occurs on one EV, the vehicle inlet latch interface may be worn or damaged.
- Persistent E16: Suggests a failed proximity switch or sensing circuit in the handle or charger. The cable/handle assembly may need replacement.
