Possible Causes

Failed ambient NTC sensor, Sensor wiring damaged near compressor compartment, Connector loose on main PCB, Sensor affected by moisture or pests

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect the freezer from mains power before accessing the rear or compressor area.

  • Locate ambient sensor: On many Balay freezers, the ambient sensor is located in the compressor compartment or near the front grille, sensing room temperature.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for chewed, pinched, or cut wires, especially where the harness passes through metal panels.
  • Check connections: Reseat the sensor connector on the main control board, ensuring it is fully inserted.
  • Test sensor resistance: With a multimeter, measure the sensor resistance at room temperature and compare with Balay specifications (commonly a few kΩ at 25°C). Replace if reading is open or shorted.
  • Replace sensor if needed: Install a new Balay ambient NTC sensor, routing the cable away from hot components and moving parts.
  • Restore power and test: Plug the freezer back in and verify that the E5 code clears and temperature control behaves normally over the next day.

If the sensor is good but the error persists, the main control board may be misinterpreting the signal and should be evaluated by a professional.
