Possible Causes
Failed DC evaporator fan motor, Ice blocking fan blades, Broken fan wiring harness, Faulty fan driver circuit on main PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect mains power before accessing internal panels or fan wiring.
- Listen for fan: After the compressor has been running for several minutes, you should normally hear the evaporator fan. If silent and E8 is displayed, suspect the fan circuit.
- Check for ice blockage: Remove drawers and inspect the rear internal panel. If heavily iced, defrost the freezer fully (12–24 hours unplugged) and then test again.
- Access the fan: Remove the inner rear panel to expose the evaporator and fan assembly.
- Inspect fan: Check if the blades spin freely by hand. Look for broken blades or obstructions.
- Test fan voltage: With the unit powered and calling for cooling (only if you are competent and using proper insulated probes), measure voltage at the fan connector according to Balay specifications (often 12 VDC). If voltage is present but the fan does not run, the motor is faulty.
- Replace fan motor: Unplug again, then remove the fan assembly and install a new Balay evaporator fan motor. Transfer the fan blade if it is separate and ensure correct rotation direction.
- Reassemble and test: Refit the panel, restore power, and confirm that the fan runs and the E8 code clears.
If no voltage is present at the fan connector, the main control board or wiring may be defective and should be diagnosed by a professional.
