Safety Warning

This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.

If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

Possible Causes

Defective compressor start relay or PTC, Failed compressor overload protector, High compressor current draw due to internal mechanical fault, Loose or burned compressor terminal connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer. The compressor circuit carries mains voltage. Do not attempt sealed system repairs without proper certification.

Access the compressor compartment:

  • Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor and control components.
  • Locate the start relay/PTC and overload protector mounted on the compressor terminals under a plastic cover.

Visual and smell check:

  • Look for burn marks or melted plastic on the relay or overload.
  • Smell for a burnt odor, which often indicates a failed PTC relay.

Test the start components:

  • Remove the relay and overload from the compressor.
  • Shake the PTC relay gently; if it rattles or pieces fall out, it is likely bad.
  • Measure continuity through the overload protector; it should be closed (low resistance) at room temperature.

Check compressor windings:

  • With all components removed, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see three finite resistances; any open circuit or direct short to ground indicates a failed compressor.

Corrective actions:

  • Replace start relay/PTC and overload: If either tests bad or shows signs of overheating, install Blomberg-compatible replacements. Ensure they are firmly seated on the compressor pins.
  • Inspect wiring: Repair any burned or loose wires and replace damaged connectors.
  • If the compressor windings are faulty or the compressor draws excessive current and trips the overload, the compressor itself is failing and requires professional sealed system replacement.

Test: Reinstall the rear panel, restore power, and listen for the compressor starting smoothly. Monitor temperature and confirm that E5 does not return.
