Possible Causes

Open-circuit freezer thermistor, shorted freezer thermistor, damaged harness between thermistor and main control board, failed main control board (PCB)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect the freezer from mains power before removing panels or handling wiring. Use an insulated screwdriver and avoid working on live circuits.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Power reset: Unplug the freezer for 5 minutes, then reconnect. If F1 returns after a few minutes, continue with diagnostics.
  • Locate the freezer thermistor: On Fisher & Paykel upright and column freezers, the freezer temperature sensor is usually clipped to the evaporator cover or mounted behind an interior panel near the rear wall.
  • Inspect wiring: Remove the inner rear panel (after taking out baskets/shelves). Check the thermistor leads and connector for corrosion, broken insulation, or loose plugs going to the cabinet harness.
  • Test the thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor from the harness and measure resistance with a multimeter. At around -18 °C, many Fisher & Paykel NTC sensors read roughly 20–30 kΩ (check service data if available). A reading of 0 Ω (short) or OL (open) indicates a bad sensor.
  • Check harness continuity: If the thermistor tests OK, test continuity from the thermistor connector back to the main control board in the compressor compartment. Repair any broken or pinched wires.
  • Replace faulty parts: If the thermistor is out of spec, replace the freezer temperature sensor (NTC thermistor). If wiring and sensor are good but F1 persists, the main control board is likely faulty and should be replaced.

When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable removing interior panels or testing resistance, or if the control board needs replacement, contact an authorized Fisher & Paykel service technician.
