Possible Causes
Failed defrost heater, open defrost thermostat or thermal fuse, faulty defrost sensor, main control board not initiating defrost
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before removing panels or testing heater circuits.
Steps:
- Remove rear panel: Take out baskets and remove the rear interior panel to inspect the evaporator.
- Check ice pattern: If the evaporator is encased in solid ice, the defrost system is not working.
- Test heater and thermostat: Disconnect the defrost heater and thermostat. Use a multimeter to check continuity. Replace the defrost heater or defrost thermostat if open.
- Sensor and control: Test the defrost thermistor for correct resistance. If components test good, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and should be replaced.
- Manual defrost: After repair, fully defrost the evaporator before restarting.
