Possible Causes
Door left open or not sealing, Heavy warm food load recently added, Failed evaporator fan motor, Low refrigerant charge or sealed system leak, Defective temperature sensor or control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: No internal electrical work is required for basic checks, but unplug the unit before removing panels.
- Check door seal and closure: Ensure the door or lid closes fully and the gasket is not obstructed by food packages. Look for gaps or torn sections in the gasket.
- Allow recovery time: If you recently loaded a large amount of unfrozen food, allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize. Keep the door closed as much as possible.
- Verify temperature setting: Confirm the control is set to the recommended freezer setting (often around -18°C / 0°F).
- Listen for compressor and fan: The compressor and interior fan should cycle on and off. If the compressor runs but the fan does not, see the evaporator fan fault section. If neither runs, check power and control settings.
- Inspect for frost pattern: If comfortable removing the rear interior panel, check the evaporator coil. A light, even frost is normal. Heavy ice buildup or no frost at all can indicate defrost or sealed system issues that may require a technician.
- Sensor/control issues: If the freezer is actually cold (ice cream hard, ice solid) but H1 persists, the cabinet temperature sensor or main control board may be misreading and could need replacement.
- When to call a technician: If the compressor is hot to the touch, runs constantly, and the freezer remains warm, a sealed system problem (refrigerant leak or weak compressor) is likely and should be handled by a licensed technician.
