Possible Causes

Clogged defrost drain hole, Frozen drain tube, Misaligned drain pan, Excessive frost due to door gasket leak

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the freezer before removing interior panels. Use towels to catch melting ice and water.

  • Locate defrost drain: Inside the freezer, remove the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator. At the bottom of the evaporator tray, there is usually a small drain hole leading to a tube.
  • Clear visible ice: Use warm (not boiling) water in a turkey baster or squeeze bottle to flush the drain hole. Repeat until water flows freely down the tube.
  • Check drain tube and pan: From the rear of the unit, locate the drain tube exiting into the drain pan above the compressor. Ensure the tube is not kinked or blocked and that the pan is properly positioned.
  • Clean pan: Empty and clean the drain pan if it is full of sludge or mold, which can slow evaporation.
  • Address frost causes: Inspect the door gasket for leaks that allow moist air in, causing excessive frost and water. Replace the door gasket if damaged.
  • Monitor: After clearing the drain, run the freezer for several days and check for further leaks.
