GE freezer shows E2 and may run continuously or not cool properly
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Disconnect power before accessing the evaporator area. Edges of metal panels and fins are sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps to address E2:
- Unplug and defrost access area: Remove food from the freezer. Take out shelves and baskets. If there is heavy frost, allow some time for partial defrost so you can remove the rear interior panel without damage.
- Remove rear interior panel: Unscrew the panel at the back of the freezer compartment to expose the evaporator coil and fan. Carefully pull the panel forward.
- Locate the evaporator thermistor: On GE freezers, this sensor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted near the coil in a plastic housing.
- Inspect the sensor and wiring: Look for broken insulation, corroded connectors, or a sensor that has come loose from the coil. Re-clip or secure the sensor firmly to the tubing if it has fallen off.
- Test the thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor from the harness and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare the reading to the temperature/resistance chart in the unit's tech sheet (commonly around 10kΩ at 77°F / 25°C). Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- Replace if needed: Install a new GE evaporator thermistor, routing the wires away from sharp fins and the fan blade. Use original clips or ties.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the rear panel, restore power, and monitor operation. The E2 code should clear after the control sees valid sensor readings.
Note: If the thermistor tests good and wiring is intact, the main control board may be defective and should be evaluated by a qualified technician.
