GE Air Infiltration / Frost Accumulation

Excessive frost buildup on interior walls, shelves, and food

Possible Causes

Damaged or dirty door gasket, Door frequently left open, Door not closing due to misaligned hinges, Failed door switch causing fan to run with door open

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the freezer before performing a manual defrost or adjusting hinges.

Steps to reduce frost:

  • Inspect door gasket: Look for gaps, tears, or hardened sections. Clean the gasket and mating surfaces with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
  • Check door alignment: Ensure the door is square with the cabinet and not sagging. Tighten hinge screws and adjust as needed so the gasket contacts evenly all around.
  • Test door switch: Verify that the interior light turns off when the door is closed. If the switch fails, the fan and controls may not behave correctly, increasing frost. Replace the GE door switch if faulty.
  • Manual defrost: Remove food, unplug the freezer, and allow all frost to melt. Use towels to absorb water. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
  • Restart and monitor: After defrosting and correcting gasket/door issues, restart the freezer and monitor for new frost over several days.

Note: Opening the door frequently or for long periods will always increase frost; minimize door openings when possible.
