Door Vacuum / Pressure Equalization Issue
Freezer door is hard to open or creates a vacuum after closing

Possible Causes
Normal pressure equalization after defrost, Blocked cabinet pressure relief port, Overly tight new door gasket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: No electrical work is required. Avoid using sharp tools around the gasket or cabinet.
Steps to ease door opening:
- Wait briefly: It is normal for the door to be harder to open for a minute or two after closing due to pressure changes. Wait 30–60 seconds and try again.
- Check relief port: Many GE freezers have a small pressure equalization port or vent. Ensure it is not blocked by packaging or debris.
- Inspect gasket: If a new gasket was installed, it may seal very tightly. Lightly coat the gasket with a thin film of petroleum jelly where it contacts the cabinet to reduce sticking.
- Verify leveling: Ensure the freezer is level and not leaning forward, which can increase door seal pressure.
Note: Persistent extreme suction may indicate a blocked vent or liner issue; if simple steps do not help, consult a technician.
