Door Alignment / Gasket Retention Problem
Freezer door will not stay closed or pops open slightly
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Warped door gasket, Misaligned hinges, Freezer not level, Magnetic gasket weakened
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Have assistance when adjusting door hinges to prevent dropping the door.
Steps to keep door closed:
- Level the cabinet: Adjust front leveling legs so the freezer tilts slightly backward. This helps the door swing closed and stay shut.
- Inspect gasket: Look for sections of the GE door gasket that are not contacting the cabinet. Use a hair dryer on low to gently warm and reshape the gasket, pulling it outward where needed.
- Check hinges: Tighten hinge screws at the top and bottom of the door. Adjust the door position so it is square with the cabinet.
- Remove obstructions: Ensure interior shelves or baskets are not pushing against the door from inside.
- Replace gasket if needed: If the gasket is torn or permanently deformed, replace it with a GE-compatible gasket for your model.
Note: After gasket replacement, it may take a day or two for the gasket to fully conform and seal properly.
