Freezer not cooling at all; interior is warm and compressor is not running

Safety warning: Unplug the freezer before accessing the compressor area. Capacitors and wiring can carry dangerous voltage.

Steps to troubleshoot:

• Listen for compressor: With the unit plugged in, you should normally hear a low hum from the compressor. If it is silent and the fans are running, suspect the start components.
• Access compressor compartment: Unplug the freezer, remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor and start device.
• Inspect start relay and overload: On GE freezers, these are usually a combined start device plugged onto the compressor terminals. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or rattling pieces inside when gently shaken.
• Test continuity: Disconnect the start device and use a multimeter to check continuity through the overload and relay per the tech sheet. Replace if open or visibly damaged.
• Install new start device: Fit a new GE compressor start relay and overload onto the compressor pins, ensuring a snug fit and correct orientation.
• Restore power and test: Reinstall the access panel, plug in the freezer, and listen for the compressor to start. Monitor cooling over several hours.

Important: If the compressor hums briefly then clicks off, or draws high current and overheats even with a new start device, the compressor itself may be locked or failing and will require a sealed system technician.
