Freezer runs constantly and rarely shuts off; interior may be too cold or just barely at setpoint

Safety: Most checks are external. Unplug the freezer before accessing sensors or controls.

Steps to reduce run time:

• Check ambient conditions: Ensure the freezer is not installed in a hot garage or tight enclosure. GE freezers are typically designed for indoor, climate-controlled spaces.
• Inspect door gasket: Look for gaps or tears. Perform the paper test around the door. Replace the GE freezer door gasket if it does not seal tightly.
• Verify temperature setting: Set the control to a moderate setting (around 0°F). Extremely low settings will cause long run times.
• Check thermistor: If the freezer is much colder than the setpoint, test the cabinet thermistor for proper resistance. Replace if out of spec.
• Evaluate control board: If the compressor never cycles off despite correct temperature and sensors, the main control relay may be stuck closed and the main control board will need replacement.

Note: After any adjustment, allow 24 hours for temperatures and run times to stabilize.
