Compressor Restart Delay / Thermal Protection
Freezer will not start after being turned off or unplugged recently
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Built-in compressor delay timer, Overheated compressor, Weak start components, High head pressure from immediate restart
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Do not repeatedly plug and unplug the freezer; this can damage the compressor.
Steps to allow restart:
- Wait for delay: Many GE freezers have a built-in 3–5 minute delay before the compressor restarts. Wait at least 10 minutes after plugging in before concluding there is a problem.
- Check ambient temperature: Ensure the area around the compressor is not excessively hot and that condenser coils are clean.
- Inspect start device: If the compressor does not start after the delay, test and replace the start relay and overload as needed.
Note: If the compressor remains hot to the touch and will not restart, a technician should evaluate for internal compressor failure.
