Possible Causes

Defective compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty compressor overload protector, High compressor current draw due to internal mechanical fault, Loose or burnt compressor wiring terminals

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Critical safety: Unplug the freezer. The compressor area contains live mains connections. If you are not comfortable working with mains voltage, contact a professional.

  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor and control components.
  • Inspect wiring and components: Check the start relay/PTC and overload protector mounted on the compressor terminals. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or loose connections.
  • Test start relay/PTC: Disconnect the relay and shake it gently; if it rattles excessively or shows signs of burning, it is likely faulty. Measure resistance according to the part specification if available.
  • Check overload protector: Test for continuity across the overload device at room temperature. An open circuit indicates a failed protector.
  • Compressor test (basic): With the unit unplugged and components removed, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C, S, R). Values should be finite and consistent with the compressor label. A short to ground (between any terminal and the compressor shell) indicates a failed compressor.
  • Replace faulty parts: Replace the compressor start relay/PTC and/or overload protector if defective. If the compressor is shorted or locked, replacement of the compressor and refrigerant handling must be done by a certified refrigeration technician.
