Possible Causes

Locked or seized compressor, Failed PTC start relay or start device, Overheated compressor due to poor ventilation, Faulty main control board compressor relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer. The compressor and start components operate at mains voltage. Do not touch copper lines immediately after running; they may be hot.

Steps to address E8:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the freezer (typically at least several inches at the back and sides). Clean dust from the condenser coils and compressor area using a soft brush and vacuum.
  • Listen for compressor behavior: After restoring power, listen: a brief hum followed by a click may indicate a start problem. Then unplug again before further work.
  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower cover to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
  • Inspect start device: Remove the PTC start relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Shake gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it may be defective.
  • Test compressor windings: With the start device removed and power disconnected, use a multimeter to measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see three low resistance values, none open or short to ground (test from each pin to the compressor shell). Abnormal readings suggest a failed compressor.
  • Replace start device: If the compressor windings test good, install a new Midea-compatible PTC start relay/overload assembly. Reconnect and test.

Warning: Compressor replacement requires refrigerant handling and must be done by an EPA-certified refrigeration technician.
