Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer. The compressor and nearby components may be hot; allow them to cool before touching.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the lower rear service panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and capacitor (if fitted).
- Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Gently pull off the start relay/PTC module. Shake it lightly; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it is likely faulty and should be replaced.
- Check capacitor: If your Montpellier model uses a start/run capacitor, visually inspect for bulging or leakage. Test capacitance with a meter; replace if out of tolerance.
- Test overload protector: The overload is usually clipped to the compressor terminal. Check for signs of overheating or burning. If it opens frequently, the compressor may be drawing excessive current.
- Replace start components: Fit a Montpellier-compatible start relay/PTC and capacitor (if used). Ensure all terminals are firmly seated and the cover is reinstalled.
- Power up and observe: Restore power and listen. If the compressor now starts smoothly and E5 clears, monitor for normal operation.
If the compressor still hums and clicks off or E5 returns, the compressor itself may be mechanically seized or drawing excessive current. Compressor replacement requires a refrigeration engineer with F-gas certification.
