Possible Causes

Spoiled food residues, Mould growth in drain or gasket, Minor refrigerant leak near evaporator, Chemical odours from packaging

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: If you suspect a strong chemical or solvent-like smell, ventilate the area and avoid sparks or flames.

  • Deep clean: Empty the freezer and clean all interior surfaces, baskets, and gasket folds with a mild bicarbonate of soda solution.
  • Clean drain: Flush the defrost drain with warm water and a little disinfectant.
  • Air out: Leave the door open for several hours with the unit unplugged to allow odours to dissipate.
  • Check for refrigerant smell: A faint ether-like smell near the evaporator or rear piping may indicate a leak. If suspected, contact a refrigeration engineer immediately.
