Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay/PTC, Open start capacitor, Tripped or failed overload protector, Loose wiring at compressor terminals

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the Montpellier freezer before accessing the compressor area.

  • Access compressor: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and electrical box.
  • Inspect connections: Check that all spade connectors are firmly attached to the compressor, start relay, and capacitor.
  • Check start relay/PTC: Remove the relay from the compressor. If it rattles when shaken or shows burn marks, replace it with a Montpellier-compatible part.
  • Test capacitor: If fitted, test the capacitor with a capacitance meter and replace if out of spec or visibly swollen.
  • Check overload: Ensure the overload protector is firmly clipped and not visibly burnt. If it repeatedly trips, the compressor may be drawing too much current.

If the compressor still does not start after replacing start components, the compressor itself may be faulty and should be assessed by a refrigeration engineer.
