Possible Causes

Stuck-closed mechanical thermostat (on basic chest models), Misreading cabinet NTC sensor, Faulty main control board not cycling compressor off, Shorted sensor wiring

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing controls or sensors.

  • Verify with thermometer: Place a separate thermometer inside to confirm actual temperature versus set point.
  • Check thermostat setting: Ensure the control knob or digital set point is not set to maximum by mistake (often marked as 'fast freeze'). Adjust to a normal setting and allow 24 hours.
  • Test mechanical thermostat: On chest freezers with a dial, remove the control box cover and test the thermostat for continuity. It should open when turned to the warmest setting. Replace if it remains closed.
  • Inspect NTC sensor: On electronic models, test the cabinet NTC sensor resistance. Replace if out of spec.

If the compressor never cycles off despite correct sensors and thermostat, the main control board may be faulty and should be replaced by a technician.
