Display shows E5 and the compressor does not run; interior light and display may still work.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. Work only from the rear service panel. Do not open the sealed refrigeration system.
- 1. Access compressor compartment: Move the freezer away from the wall. Remove the lower rear cover to expose the compressor, start device, and control module.
- 2. Listen and observe: After plugging in (for testing only), listen for clicking from the start relay or humming from the compressor. Then unplug again before touching anything.
- 3. Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Detach the start relay/PTC module. Check for burn marks, rattling pieces inside, or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
- 4. Test compressor windings: With the unit unplugged, measure resistance between the three compressor pins (C, S, R). You should see low but finite resistances; no pin should be shorted to the compressor shell (ground). If windings are open or shorted, the compressor is faulty.
- 5. Check run capacitor (if present): If your Severin model uses a capacitor, test it with a capacitance meter. Replace if far out of spec or shorted.
- 6. Inverter models: If the compressor is connected to an inverter board rather than a simple relay, inspect the inverter for burnt components. Replacement of the inverter module is usually required if faulty.
- 7. Reassemble and test: Refit the start device or inverter, secure the cover, restore power, and see if E5 clears and the compressor starts reliably.
Important: If the compressor itself is seized or has electrical faults, replacement requires specialized tools and refrigerant handling and must be done by a licensed refrigeration technician.
