Possible Causes
Failed evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor encased in heavy ice, Broken or shorted sensor wiring, Faulty main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before removing any covers. Wear cut-resistant gloves; evaporator fins are sharp.
Steps:
- Defrost first: If the evaporator area is heavily iced, unplug the freezer and leave the door open for several hours or use a hair dryer on low (kept moving and away from plastic) to melt ice. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
- Access the evaporator: Remove baskets and the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator coil. The evaporator sensor is usually clipped to the coil or attached to the suction line.
- Inspect the sensor: Look for a small probe or bullet-style sensor with two wires. Check for broken insulation, corrosion, or a sensor that has come loose from the coil.
- Test resistance: With the freezer unplugged, disconnect the sensor from the harness and measure resistance. Compare to the cabinet sensor value at similar temperature. If it reads open or short, replace it.
- Check wiring to control board: Follow the harness from the evaporator area to the control board compartment (usually at the rear or top). Repair any damaged wires or loose connectors.
- Replace the evaporator sensor: Install an OEM Westinghouse evaporator NTC sensor. Clip it firmly to the coil in the original location for accurate defrost control.
- If error persists with a good sensor: The main control board defrost/temperature circuit may be defective and should be replaced.
