Possible Causes
Defective ambient NTC sensor, Sensor dislodged from correct location, Damaged harness between sensor and PCB, Failed control board input circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before removing control covers or toe-kicks.
Procedure:
- Locate the ambient sensor: On many Westinghouse models, the ambient sensor is near the front grille, behind the control panel, or in the top hinge area where it can sense room temperature.
- Visual inspection: Check that the sensor is not hanging loose inside the cabinet or pressed against cold metal. It should be in free air. Inspect the wiring for kinks, cuts, or rodent damage.
- Test the sensor: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to typical NTC values (often 5–20 kΩ at 25°C). Replace if open or shorted.
- Check connectors: Reseat the plug at the control board. Look for corrosion or bent pins.
- Replace faulty parts: If the sensor is out of spec, install a new Westinghouse ambient temperature sensor. If the sensor tests good but E3 remains, replace the main control board.
