Display shows E5 and compressor may not start or may shut off quickly.

Safety: Unplug the freezer. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system. High voltage is present at the compressor terminals.

Steps:

• Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower cover to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
• Inspect start device: The start relay/overload assembly is plugged onto the compressor pins. Check for burn marks, melted plastic, or rattling pieces inside when gently shaken.
• Test the relay and overload: With a multimeter, check continuity through the overload and relay according to the wiring diagram. If open or visibly damaged, replace the start device assembly.
• Check compressor windings: With the start device removed and power disconnected, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see three different low resistance values and no continuity to ground. If windings are shorted to ground or open, the compressor is faulty.
• Replace start device: If the compressor tests good, install a new OEM Westinghouse compressor start relay/overload kit.
• If E5 persists and compressor is good: The main control board may not be sending proper power to the compressor. Replace the control board.
• Do not: Do not bypass the overload or run the compressor without proper protection.
