Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay or overload, Defective mechanical thermostat or electronic control, Open wiring to compressor, Failed compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing the compressor or controls. Do not attempt to open the sealed system.
Steps:
- Listen for operation: With the unit plugged in, listen for compressor hum or clicking. Repeated clicking every few minutes often indicates a start device problem.
- Check temperature control: Ensure the thermostat or control is not set to OFF. Turn to the coldest setting and wait several minutes.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower cover. Inspect the start relay/overload on the compressor for burn marks or melted plastic.
- Test start device: With power disconnected, remove the start relay/overload and test for continuity. Replace with an OEM Westinghouse start device if open or rattling.
- Test compressor windings: Measure resistance between compressor pins and to ground. If windings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is faulty and requires professional replacement.
- Check control output: If the compressor and start device are good, the thermostat or main control board may not be sending power. Test for voltage at the compressor terminals (by a qualified person) and replace the control if no output.
