Possible Causes
Open or shorted cabinet thermistor, Loose or corroded thermistor connector, Damaged wiring harness in door or liner, Failed main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing control housings or wiring.
- Locate the cabinet thermistor: On many Whirlpool freezers, the cabinet or ambient thermistor is behind a small plastic cover in the liner wall or in the control housing near the temperature display.
- Visual inspection: Remove the cover and inspect the sensor and wiring for moisture damage, corrosion, or broken insulation. Dry any condensation and clean light corrosion with electrical contact cleaner.
- Check resistance: Unplug the unit, disconnect the thermistor, and measure resistance. Compare to the temperature/resistance chart on the tech sheet (usually behind the kick plate or rear panel). Replace if open, shorted, or out of spec.
- Inspect harness to control board: Follow the wires to the main control. Look for pinched or cut wires, especially where they pass through the cabinet. Repair with heat-shrink butt connectors if damaged.
- Replace control board if needed: If the thermistor and wiring are good but E2 persists, replace the main control board following the service manual steps.
