Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Open thermal overload protector, Loose connection on compressor terminals, Weak or locked compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. The compressor terminals carry line voltage. Do not attempt sealed system work unless qualified.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor and start device.
- Inspect start device: Remove the plastic cover on the side of the compressor. Check the start relay/overload assembly for burn marks, rattling pieces inside, or melted plastic.
- Test start relay: Disconnect the relay and measure resistance across its terminals per the tech sheet. If open or visibly damaged, replace with the correct Whirlpool start device.
- Check overload: Test for continuity through the overload protector. If open at room temperature, replace it.
- Compressor test: With the start device removed, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and not shorted to ground. If windings are open or shorted to the shell, the compressor is failed and requires professional replacement.
