Possible Causes
Dust accumulation on heat exchanger, Debris on electric components, Overheating wiring near Termet burner compartment
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: If you smell burning plastic or see smoke, turn off power immediately.
- Initial burn-off: A mild dusty smell at first startup of the season is normal and should dissipate after a few cycles.
- Clean interior: With power off, vacuum dust from the burner compartment, blower, and accessible surfaces.
- Inspect wiring: Look for discolored or melted insulation near hot areas. Do not operate the furnace if damaged wiring is found.
Persistent or strong burning smells require inspection by a Termet technician to rule out overheating or electrical faults.
