Maxmatic Impeller Plate Jam / Rotor Locked

Garbage disposal hums but the grinding plate does not spin; unit may shut off on overload after a few seconds.

Possible Causes

Foreign object jammed in grinding chamber, Seized impeller plate on motor shaft, Bent shredder ring obstructing rotation, Worn motor start capacitor unable to start under load

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and shut off the circuit breaker. Never put your hand into the disposal while it is connected to power.

  • Use the hex (Allen) service port: On most Maxmatic models, there is a hex socket in the center of the bottom housing. Insert the correct size Allen wrench and rotate back and forth firmly to free the impeller plate. Do not force it to the point of bending.
  • Remove foreign objects: With power off, use tongs or pliers from the sink opening to remove bones, metal, glass, or other debris. Rotate the plate manually with a wooden spoon to ensure it moves freely.
  • Inspect for bent shredder ring: Shine a flashlight into the chamber. If the stationary shredder ring is visibly bent inward and scraping the plate, the grinding assembly may need replacement.
  • Reset overload: After clearing the jam, press the reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power and briefly test. If it still only hums and trips, the start capacitor or motor may be failing.

If the motor continues to hum without turning after clearing all obstructions, the motor start capacitor or motor itself is likely defective and the disposal assembly usually needs replacement.
