Garbage disposal trips the circuit breaker or GFCI immediately when switched on.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the breaker and unplug the disposal if it has a cord. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker without finding the cause.
- Inspect under-sink area for leaks: Look for water around the disposal housing, junction box, and control module. If water is present, dry the area thoroughly and locate the source of the leak (sink flange, dishwasher inlet, or drain connections) before further testing.
- Check the power cord: If your Maxmatic uses a plug-in cord, inspect it for cuts, crushed sections, or burn marks. Replace the cord set if damaged.
- Open the junction box: With power off, remove the cover and inspect wire nuts and insulation. Ensure no bare copper is touching the metal housing or other conductors.
- Isolate the disposal: If possible, unplug the disposal and see if the breaker still trips when the switch is turned on (with nothing plugged in). If it does not trip, the disposal is likely shorted internally.
If the breaker or GFCI trips only when the disposal is connected and turned on, the motor windings or internal wiring are likely compromised. Replacement of the entire Maxmatic disposal unit is typically required.
