Organic Buildup / Biofilm in Chamber and Drain
Garbage disposal emits a persistent foul odor even after running with water.

Possible Causes
Food residue trapped under splash guard, Grease buildup on grinding chamber walls, Decomposing food in drain line, Infrequent flushing with water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the disposal before cleaning. Do not use your bare hands inside the chamber.
- Clean the splash guard: Remove the rubber baffle/splash guard and scrub both sides with hot, soapy water. Food often accumulates on the underside.
- Scrub the chamber: Use a long-handled brush with dish soap to scrub the inside walls of the Maxmatic chamber and around the shredder ring.
- Deodorize: Grind a tray of ice cubes with a cup of baking soda and cold water, then flush with hot water. You can also grind small citrus peels for a fresher smell.
- Flush the drain: Run hot water for several minutes to help clear grease from the drain line.
If odors persist, the smell may be coming from further down the drain or from a dirty dishwasher connection; additional plumbing cleaning may be required.
