Possible Causes
Metal utensil or bone lodged between impeller and shredder ring, Foreign object wedged in grinding chamber, Rust buildup seizing impeller plate, Worn bearings causing lock-up
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the switch and shut off the breaker. Never attempt to free a jam with the power on.
- Use the service wrench: Insert the Maxmatic service (Allen) wrench into the bottom hex port and work the impeller plate back and forth until it rotates freely.
- Remove debris from above: From the sink opening, use pliers or tongs to remove any foreign objects. Do not put your hand inside.
- Reset overload: Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit after clearing the jam and allow a few minutes for cooling.
- Test with water only: Restore power and run the disposal with cold water only for a few seconds to confirm smooth operation before grinding food again.
If the plate cannot be freed or the unit immediately jams again, internal damage may require replacement of the disposal.
