Possible Causes
Air lock in pump wet end, Seized motor bearings, Debris jammed in impeller, Failed start capacitor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the GFCI breaker before touching the pump.
- 1. Bleed air: Loosen the pump unions slightly to release trapped air until water flows, then retighten.
- 2. Try manual rotation: With power off, attempt to rotate the pump shaft using a screwdriver at the rear of the motor (if accessible). If it is stuck, the pump may be seized.
- 3. Check for obstructions: Remove the pump wet end and inspect the impeller for debris. Clean and reassemble.
- 4. Capacitor or motor replacement: If the motor hums but will not start even when free to turn, the start capacitor or motor windings may be faulty. Replace the pump motor or complete pump assembly.
