Possible Causes

Air pocket in heater tube, Loose high-limit sensor, Poor water circulation, Failing high-limit sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker.

  • Bleed air from heater and pump: Loosen the pump union and heater union slightly until air escapes and water seeps out, then retighten. This ensures the heater tube is fully flooded.
  • Check sensor mounting: Confirm the high-limit sensor is firmly attached to the heater tube and making good thermal contact. Tighten clamp or fitting as needed.
  • Restore flow: Clean or replace the filter and verify that the circulation or low-speed pump runs continuously during heating.
  • Replace sensor if nuisance trips continue: If HL appears repeatedly with normal water temperature and good flow, replace the high-limit sensor.
