E7 displayed, fan may run but compressor does not engage
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor and associated wiring carry mains voltage. Only proceed if you are competent with electrical testing.
Steps:
- 1. Access compressor terminals: Remove the rear or side panel to expose the compressor. Remove the terminal cover to access the start, run, and common pins.
- 2. Check overload protector: Inspect the thermal overload device clipped to the compressor. Ensure it is firmly attached and its terminals are not burnt. Test for continuity; replace if open when cool.
- 3. Test compressor windings: With all wires removed from the compressor, measure resistance between each pair of pins. You should see low but finite resistance values; any open circuit or direct short to the compressor shell indicates a failed compressor.
- 4. Inspect start relay/PTC: Many Ebac units use a PTC start device or relay on the compressor. Check for signs of overheating or cracking. Replace if suspect.
- 5. Verify supply to compressor: With the unit reassembled enough to run safely, and using extreme caution, verify that the control board is sending power to the compressor relay when dehumidification is demanded.
- 6. Replace components: Replace a faulty overload protector, start relay/PTC, or compressor as indicated by testing. Compressor replacement requires a qualified refrigeration technician.
Note: Do not bypass the overload protector or operate the compressor with damaged wiring.
