Possible Causes
Overheated compressor, Failed compressor overload protector, Blocked condenser coil or restricted airflow, Faulty main control board relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Do not bypass safety devices such as overload protectors.
Steps:
- Check ambient conditions: Ensure the unit is not operating in a very hot, confined space. Move it to a cooler, well-ventilated area with at least 12 inches of clearance around all sides.
- Clean condenser and filter: Remove and clean the air filter. Access the rear or side condenser coil and gently vacuum dust and lint from the fins. Blocked airflow can overheat the compressor.
- Inspect fan operation: Plug in and run the unit briefly. Confirm the fan runs at full speed. If the fan is slow or not running, the compressor will overheat.
- Allow cool-down: If the compressor was very hot, leave the unit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to allow the overload protector to reset.
- Check compressor area: With power disconnected, remove the rear panel to view the compressor. Inspect the overload protector and start device for burn marks or melted plastic.
- Test again: Reassemble and run the unit. If E5 returns quickly and the compressor is not starting or is very hot, the overload or compressor may be failing.
- Professional service: Compressor and overload replacement require specialized tools and refrigerant handling. Contact an authorized Frigidaire technician.
