Possible Causes

Faulty tray position sensor, Obstructed ice tray movement, Damaged tray drive motor, Broken tray gear or linkage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before opening any covers or touching internal moving parts.

  • Inspect ice tray area: Open the ice bin compartment and visually inspect the ice tray. Remove any oversized ice cubes, clumped ice, or foreign objects that may block the tray from rotating.
  • Check for ice buildup: Look for frost or ice accumulation around the tray pivot points and drive mechanism. Defrost the unit by turning it off and leaving the door open for several hours, or use a hair dryer on low heat at a safe distance (do not overheat plastic parts).
  • Test tray movement: With the unit reassembled and powered, start a cycle and observe whether the tray attempts to rotate. If it stalls or makes grinding noises, the tray motor or gears may be damaged.
  • Access tray motor and sensor: Remove the internal cover over the ice tray assembly (usually held by a few screws). Locate the tray drive motor and the position sensor (often a small Hall sensor or micro-switch). Check wiring harness connections for looseness or corrosion.
  • Replace faulty components: If the motor does not run but has proper voltage, replace the tray drive motor. If the tray rotates but the unit cannot detect home position, replace the tray position sensor.
