Possible Causes
Jammed ice tray mechanism, Failed tray drive motor, Broken tray position sensor or microswitch, Stripped gear in tray drive assembly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the appliance before inspecting moving parts.
- Check for mechanical jams: Remove the ice basket and look at the evaporator fingers and tray area. Clear any large ice chunks or foreign objects that may block the tray from rotating or tilting.
- Manually move the tray (if accessible): Gently try to move the tray or ice shovel arm by hand. It should move smoothly with slight resistance. If it is seized, inspect for ice buildup and thaw with a warm, damp cloth (never use sharp tools).
- Inspect the tray motor and gears: Remove the rear or side panel to access the tray motor assembly. Look for cracked plastic gears or a loose motor mount. Replace the tray motor/gearbox assembly if gears are stripped.
- Check position sensor or microswitch: Locate the small switch or sensor that detects tray home position. Ensure its actuator is not bent or obstructed. Test continuity with a multimeter when the tray is in different positions; replace if it does not change state.
- Reassemble and test: After clearing jams and checking components, reassemble and run a cycle. Persistent E3 usually indicates a failed tray motor or position sensor that must be replaced.
