Possible Causes

Jammed ice tray, Broken ice shovel or ejector arm, Defective tray motor, Faulty tray position sensor or microswitch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance before touching the ice tray or internal mechanisms.

Steps:

  • Inspect the ice tray: Open the lid and look at the evaporator fingers and ice tray. Remove any large ice chunks that may be wedged between the tray and housing. Do not use metal tools that could damage the evaporator.
  • Check the ice shovel/ejector arm: Gently move the shovel or arm by hand (with power disconnected). It should move smoothly without binding. If it is broken or loose, it will need replacement.
  • Defrost the unit: Allow the unit to sit unplugged with the lid open for 30–60 minutes to melt any hidden ice blocking the tray movement. Place towels to catch meltwater.
  • Restart: Plug the unit back in and start a new cycle. Listen for the tray motor. If E3 reappears and the tray does not move at all, the motor or position sensor is likely faulty.

Service note: Replacing the tray motor or position sensor requires disassembly of the internal frame and should be done by a qualified technician familiar with Bomann ice maker assemblies.
