Possible Causes
Defective de-ice thermistor on evaporator plate, Open defrost heater (if equipped), Faulty hot-gas valve not switching correctly, Control board defrost timing failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing internal components. Avoid using sharp tools to remove ice buildup.
- Manual defrost: Open the door, remove the ice bin, and allow the unit to defrost naturally for several hours. Place towels to catch meltwater. Do not use hair dryers or heat guns near plastic parts.
- Inspect de-ice sensor: Locate the thermistor or sensor attached to the ice-making plate or evaporator. Check for dislodged clips, damaged insulation, or broken wires. Reseat the connector at the main PCB.
- Test sensor resistance: With the unit unplugged, measure the sensor resistance at room temperature and compare to Brandt specifications. Replace the de-ice thermistor if readings are out of range or intermittent.
- Check hot-gas valve operation: During harvest, the hot-gas solenoid should energize. Listen for a click and feel for a temperature change on the hot-gas line. If the coil is open or the valve is stuck, replace the hot-gas solenoid valve.
- Inspect defrost heater (if present): Some models use a small heater on the plate. Test for continuity; replace if open.
- Control board evaluation: If all hardware checks good but E4 recurs, the defrost control logic on the main PCB may be faulty and require replacement.
