Possible Causes
Stalled ice shovel motor, Broken gear in ice tray drive, Faulty position sensor or limit switch, Obstruction by oversized ice cubes or foreign object
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before touching the ice shovel or internal moving parts. Do not force parts while powered.
Steps:
- Open the lid and inspect: Look at the ice shovel or rotating tray. Check for jammed ice cubes, clumped ice, or foreign objects (e.g., spoon, packaging) blocking movement. Remove any obstruction.
- Manually move the shovel/tray: With power off, gently move the shovel or tray through its range. It should move smoothly. Grinding or binding suggests a broken gear or warped component.
- Check the drive motor: Access the ice shovel motor by removing the top or side cover. Inspect the motor, gearbox, and coupling for cracks or stripped gears.
- Inspect wiring and sensor: Locate any position sensor (reed switch, Hall sensor, or micro-switch) associated with the tray. Ensure it is firmly mounted and the magnet/actuator aligns correctly.
- Reassemble and test: After clearing jams, plug the unit back in and start a cycle. If E4 clears and the shovel cycles normally, no further action is needed.
- Replace faulty parts: If the motor hums but does not turn, or if the tray does not move at all, replace the ice shovel motor assembly or ice tray drive gear set. If the motor runs continuously and E4 persists, replace the tray position sensor.
