Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coil, Failed condenser fan motor, Overheated or failing compressor, Faulty thermal overload protector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. The compressor and condenser area may be hot; allow it to cool before touching.

Steps to address:

  • 1. Check ventilation: Ensure there is at least the manufacturer-recommended clearance around the sides and back of the ice maker. Do not enclose it in a tight cabinet.
  • 2. Clean condenser coil: Remove the rear or bottom panel to access the condenser coil (metal radiator-like fins). Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint. Do not bend the fins.
  • 3. Verify fan operation: With the panel off, plug in and start the unit. Confirm the condenser fan motor spins freely and at full speed. If it does not run or is noisy, replace the fan motor.
  • 4. Check ambient temperature: Move the unit to a cooler location if room temperature is very high. Excessive ambient heat can cause compressor overload.
  • 5. Inspect overload protector: The compressor has a thermal overload device clipped to its side. If it is clicking repeatedly or shows signs of damage, it may be weak and require replacement.
  • 6. Persistent E5: If the compressor is extremely hot to the touch or fails to start even after cooling and cleaning, the compressor itself may be failing and will require professional service.
